Podcast Open Thread: Pearl Jr. and Can Black Women Get Love in the Media

If you didn't get a chance to participate in the rumble in the podcast jungle last night, we had lots of strong reactions and this by far was the most mentally demanding show of the entire year. By all means, share your thoughts and views.

Join Us Tonight on the Podcast- We'll be Discussing Child Abuse Within the Black Community

Apriil is Child Abuse Awareness Month. To do our part to increase awareness, we will be dedicating this week's podcast to increasing awareness. You can join in or just listen. The show begins at 8:00PM CST Tonight ( April 10,2008). The call in number is 646-478-4750 or you can listen live online or participate in the chatroom.

Our first guest will be author Stephanie Jones, a survivor and child abuse awareness advocate. The wrote the book, "The Enemy Between My Legs". According to Jones:

One in three females and one in five males are sexually abused. According to the organizations Darkness to Light and ChildHelp.com, the effects of sexual abuse extend far beyond the years in which it actually takes place and ends. Drug and alcohol abuse, low self-esteem, promiscuity, excessive spending habits, health issues, and problems forming and maintaining relationships are just some of the long-term results of sexual abuse.

66% of teen pregnancies and abortions are preceded by sexual assault.
96% of prostitutes were sexual abuse victims.
75% of rapists were sexual abuse victims.
60% of children who experience abuse and neglect are more likely to be arrested.
Sexual abuse victims often suffer self-esteem, financial and weight problems.

This isn't as popular a topic as the election, but its a conversation we need to have none the less.

Project New Era

We'll also be joined by the founder of Project New Era. A new organization designed to rais awareness of traumatic events and crimes committed against African American women, men and children:

Project New Era is a site started as a movement towards helping to inform those
that will listen about the wrong doings against the black community all over the
world, thus filling an obvious ‘gap’ left by mainstream media. The primary focus
of this site is to find, report and follow-up with stories related to the black
community that includes (but is not limited to) topics such as missing and/or
murdered (black) women and children, social injustices related to our community,
as well as issues related to the plight of black men. Project New Era

I am going to try to use the podcast to promote more folks who are using what they have to do what they can.
