Well At Least they Are Consistent: NAACP Protests Sentencing of "barbie bandits"- "A crime is a crime is a crime"

I vowed to try to have a three week moratorium on posting about the NAACP after the Dunbar Village debacle, but this story jumped out at me in light of our April 3rd podcast where the Florida NAACP President and NAACP spokes person Richard McIntire were our guests. During the show, listeners challenged the "appearance" that the NAACP only appears to speak out on behalf of Black male criminals , and the NAACP Spokesperson Mr. RichardMcIntire McInLIAR ( whoever came up with McInLiar gets an award) said on our show that the media reports what it wants to report as it relates to the work of the NAACP.

So of course when I saw a cnn.com headline with NAACP in it, I looked to see what the "media" was "electing" to report. Its amazing how selective the media can get when you stage a press conference on the court house steps in a high profile case and those "evil" media folks show up with microphones and cameras.. THE NERVE of the media covering your press conference that you called to talk about a high profile case.

Fresh off of their press conference to decry what they think is the "unfair" treatment of the suspects in the Dunbar Village rape and torture case, the NAACP in Georgia is speaking out on the "Barbie bandits" case because the two white women who actually walked in the bank to take the money received probation and their two Black male accomplices received 5 years and 20 years. It is like a scene out of the movie Malcolm X where the two white women get light sentences and they send Malcolm to the clank for years.

The head of the Georgia NAACP called for the state to investigate the sentences
given in the so-called "Barbie bandits" bank theft case, saying the two white
defendants got less prison time than two black men. Edward DuBose said Monday
he will ask state Attorney General Thurbert Baker to look into the case. Baker's
office did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment Tuesday.Last month, Cobb County Superior Court Judge Mary Staley sentenced 20-year-old Heather Johnston to 10 years probation after she pleaded guilty to a charge of theft by taking in the 2007 heist. The judge gave 19-year-old Ashley Miller two years in jail and eight years probation. Both women are white. Michael Chastang, 28, was sentenced to 10 years for being the mastermind of the robbery, and bank teller Bennie Allen III, 23, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to five years. Both men are black. Chastang also is serving 15 years on unrelated drug-trafficking charges and Allen was on probation for a drug conviction. Associated
Press
When I heard what the Barbie Bandits had been sentenced to, I also shook my head and said "no way." I did not know at the time that they also had African American accomplices. I was just thinking that if these young women had been Black or Hispanic or even if they had been white women who did not fit within the narrow standard of beauty, they would have been thrown in the clank. (ignore the mug shot pictures, they lived up to their "Barbie" label at sentencing with fresh dye jobs) So I can't quarrel with the NAACP pointing out a clear discrepancy. But once again, they have some troublesome facts to deal with. Sandra Rose breaks it down. She is based out of Atlanta and then she asks:

Was the judge supposed to ignore the fact that both men were already out on probation for serious drug offenses? Doesn’t the NAACP have anything else better to do with its time? SandraRose.com
Well the answer to her question is NO. It is clear that the NAACP has made a decision as an organization to make African American criminal defendants, the face of their most public nation-wide campaign. All of these branches are following the same script. Pick a high profile local case, hold a press conference in front of the prosecutor's office decrying unfair treatment and move on. The problem three weeks ago with their Dunbar Village press conference is that there was a vociferous response from victims rights advocates decrying a) their comparison of a horrific crime against humanity to any other crime and b) arguing that some potentially violent sociopaths be released back into the community pending trial ( I don't care what they say, their intentions in WPB were clear)

A Pattern??? A Crime is a Crime is a Crime?

I did a google news search of the NAACP. In addition to their Dunbar Village fiasco where the NAACP along with Al Sharpton declared that a rape is a rape is a rape in their eyes, two other local NAACP chapters in Florida are holding press conferences to declare that a murder is a murder is a murder.

In Manatee county Florida, the NAACP is decrying the sentencing in a murder case where a 67 year old man and his wife were gunned down in their home. The Black defendants face life in prison. But wait, where have you heard the following before?

Authorities say Walker was the driver of the getaway car. They're seeking a life
sentence. Local NAACP presidents Trevor Harvey and Edward Bailey say in similar cases white accomplices have received lighter sentences. They also point out the decision involving the murder of 9-year-old Stacey William's case. The convicted felons got a plea bargain, which only gave them four years for the crime.
WWSB
I am sure 9-year-old Stacey William's family did not appreciate the comparison nor does the family of Daniel Ramsey. If you are going to make the case for disparate treatment in the system, why not compare DEFENDANTS in the aggregate? If you are trying to raise public awareness of an issue, it might be prudent to do so in a manner that is not morally repugnant.

There has to be a more articulate and effective way to make this argument other than "A rape is a rape is a rape- A murder is a murder is a murder." Someone needs to go back to the drawing board because this argument is apparently being used nationwide by the NAACP, not just the West Palm Beach Branch. Disparate sentencing is an issue, but your spokespeople aren't the best on it.

By going HIGH PROFILE when it comes to arguing on behalf of Black criminal defendants and being more "low key" *cough*silent*cough* when it comes to the victims of black on black crime, you run into charges that you only appear to champion criminals and it undermines the explanation that you do not get involved in individual criminal cases. By comparing the slaughter of a 9-year-old girl to the slaughter of a senior citizen, you run the risk of being callus towards the victims of the crime and appearing to minimize violent crime.

Someone has to pursue this issue, but I can't help but question this courthouse press conference strategy they are employing to pick any case involving a White defendant at random and hold it up against a case involving a Black defendant and scream "It's Unfair" you are always going to open yourself up to having to explain away the unique facts in each case.

Look at What Y'all Did: NAACP Does 180 on West Palm Beach Prosecutors... Two More Suspects MAY be Arrested-Update on the Victims

Wow,

Talk about a reversal. Three weeks ago, the local West Palm Beach Chapter of the NAACP was holding a press conference scolding the local prosecutors and claiming that the suspects were being treated unfairly. This week, the state president Obi Adora Nweze, who spoke with us on our most recent podcast met with prosecutors and to quote law enforcement and the prosecutors present "they were completely focussed on the victims." Richard McIntire might be a tad bit off, but somebody in that organization has a clue:

Earlier this week, Edmondson and prosecutor Lanna Belohlavek met with officials from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to discuss the Dunbar Village case.

"They were all understandably moved at how horrible this crime is," Edmondson said. "They did voice some very, very strong interest and concern in supporting the victims of the Dunbar case, they were completely focused on the victims."

That meeting happened on the same day state NAACP officials met with officials from the local branch to discuss last month's controversial news conference outside the State Attorney's Office with the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Adora Obi Nweze, president of the Florida State Conference NAACP, said she wanted to talk about the uproar among bloggers that accused NAACP officials of being more concerned with the Dunbar Village defendants than with the victims.

"The branch of the NAACP has and will always be concerned about the victims," Nweze said. "We have and continue to this day to apologize for any statements that we made that led anyone to think that we were not concerned about the victims and for that we offer a deep apology." Sun Sentinel.
THAT would not have happened if Black folks with common sense had not joined together to call them on their foolishness. The victims of Black on Black crime deserve justice too. Now if somebody could just explain that to Mr. McIntire from the national office of the NAACP, because he stated numerous times that he is perplexed why it is we were indignant. Mrs. Nweze has a clue or two. She didn't hide out in Baltimore mailing out letters trying to blame bloggers for embarrassing the NAACP and Rev. Sharpton. What we said may have been unflattering, but it was not untrue.

Two More Suspects Being Pursued.
"[W]e still spend hours a week on the case. It won't go away until we get everyone…one day we'll have them all." Detective Lori Colombino on the Dunbar Village case.

Last week we discussed the fact that if the NAACP should have been holding a press conference about anything, it should have been holding a press conference to complain that there were 6 remaining suspects tunning loose in this case. Well this week law enforcement asked for two additional search warrants in the case. They had to wait until they had additional evidence to corroborate the statements of the Dunbar Village suspect that struck a plea deal. He's naming names.

Police have asked the State Attorney's Office to issue arrest warrants for two more juveniles in the notorious Dunbar Village rape case, where a mother and son were brutalized for hours, West Palm Beach police said Friday.

One of the four teens arrested, Jakaris Taylor, accepted a plea deal that required his testimony. He identified two other juvenile defendants and police filed the charges with the State Attorney's Office. Because police have no physical evidence on the two unidentified juveniles, they could not arrest them on Taylor's word alone, they said. Sun Sentinel
I don't mind the pace as long as they get it right and the convictions of the guilty parties hold up.

Update on the Victims
Lots of people ask me about the victims in this case. Here is an update for those of you who frequently ask.

Colombino, who helped investigate the case, helped move the mother and son into a new rental home, decorated the tree, wrapped the presents and frequently checked in on them- even when she was off-duty.

"They're such a loving family. They're wonderful. They're nice people. They're genuinely good people," Colombino said. "I couldn't imagine anything like this happening to anyone in my family."

The victims are enduring a "daily struggle," Colombino said.

But the 35-year-old mother is paying her bills at her rental home and has returned to school. Her son is also going to school.

Colombino doesn't know the total value of donations that went through the police department, but people gave cash, jewelry, clothes and gift cards.

Colombino said the 12-year-old boy's favorite gift was a skateboard.

"He loves that thing," Colombino said. Palm Beach Post

I actually applaud the prosecutors, the press, and law enforcement for protecting their privacy and their anonymity.

NAACP National Office Responds to the Dunbar Village Email Accountability Campaign

The following is a statement from the NAACP in response to the email accountability campaign launched following their joint press conference with Rev. Al Sharpton regarding bail for the suspects in the Dunbar Village rape and torture case.
E-mails misrepresent NAACP's position on Dunbar Village case

A series of viral e-mails circulating the Internet the past several days distort and misrepresent the NAACP's stance on the Dunbar Village gang rape case that began last June in south Florida.

The NAACP does not condone violence against anyone. Any suggestion to the contrary is not credible in light of the Association's long history of opposing violence against all persons.

In fact, it was the West Palm Beach Branch NAACP and area churches, among others, that provided assistance in the relocation of the victims in this horrific and inexplicable criminal matter.

"The NAACP cares deeply that justice be applied equally, without regards to race, but cares just as deeply that guilty parties be held accountable for their actions," said Adora Obi Nweze, president of the Florida State Conference, NAACP.

The NAACP National Office nor the Florida NAACP have taken any formal position on the case and both believe this situation will benefit from well meaning, interested parties allowing the facts to become further known and letting defense lawyers do their work.

"The lives of the victims in this case are irrevocably altered in the worst way," said NAACP Interim President & CEO Dennis Courtland Hayes. "While we respect the judicial process and implore that equal justice be rendered for all involved, we must also focus on ending the continuing plague of violence in our communities.

"The NAACP and its affiliates will continue to closely monitor the proceedings and details of this case, said West Palm Beach Branch NAACP President Maude Ford Lee, who added, "Earlier reports that my remarks support the heinous acts of the guilty parties could not be further from the truth."

There Was No Misrepresentation
This blog stands by every word that has been written about this incident. They may have been misunderstood, but that isn't the fault of bloggers and every single media outlet in south Florida who covered that debacle disguised as a press conference. Read the rebuttal to the "we were misrepresented by the bloggers" response. What is important is that Maude has backed away from her fool hearty misadventure.

Florida State President Agrees to Join Us on This Week's Podcast

The Florida State President of the NAACP who also sits on the national board has agreed to join us for the podcast this Thursday at 8:00PM CST. I think wisely folks have realized that there needs to be a dialog about such a serious "misunderstanding." We'll take your questions this Thursday at 8:00PM CST on the Black Women's Roundtable.

Chicago Tribune Covers NAACP & AL Sharpton Joint Dunbar Village Press Conference and the Email Accountability Campaign-UPDATE: Larger NAACP Role???

UPDATE 3/30: According to Frank Cerabino who is with the Palm Beach Post and was at the rally, these fliers were handed out by the West Palm Beach NAACP President Maude Ford Lee. Oh the plot thickens.......
Maude Ford Lee, the president of the West Palm Beach NAACP chapter, spoke alongside Sharpton while the assembled media were handed a flier showing the photos of three of the accused Dunbar Village rapists with the words, "Voiceless, Vulnerable, Victims!!" next to them. Palm Beach Post
If this is true, the NAACP needs to explain their role in that press conference and those fliers!! Feel free to forward these fliers on to your friends who are NAACP members. Are the fliers their official position on the Dunbar Village case?

The Chicago Tribune did a story on the Dunbar Village rape and torture case and the press conference called by Al Sharpton and the West Palm Beach NAACP and the viral email campaign launched by African American bloggers to challenge their attempt to undermine the criminal prosecution of one of the most heinous hate crimes and crimes against humanity that I have ever heard in my life. Here is Sharpton's response to the reporter, Howard Witt, who wrote the article. NO WONDER AL decided to address this on his show Thursday. He knew this was coming:

For his part, Sharpton strongly denied in an interview with the Tribune last week that he was ignoring the plight of the Dunbar Village victims or insisting that their accused attackers should be freed on bond. He said his comments at the March 11 news conference had been misunderstood, and that he had visited Dunbar Village several times this year to show support for the residents and denounce the "hideous, deplorable" crime.

"My position is there ought to be one standard," Sharpton said. "The white kids in Boca Raton ought to be held just like the black kids in Dunbar Village. Why are they not doing the same with the white kids?" Chicago Tribune
Al Sharpton appears to be the only person who was at that Dunbar Village press conference who did not know why he was there. The Rape suspects families who HSarpton met with prior to the press conference and flanked him at the podium thought he was there to help get their boys get bail. The NAACP notified the press the day before that Rev. Sharpton was coming to town to say the rape suspects were being treated unfairly. Every news outlet that covered the press conference and eyewitnesses said he was there to speak about about the suspects being treated unfairl.you can read the very well written rebuttal to Sharpton's "explanation" that he wasn't there in support of the rape suspects. (Don't Believe the Lies: Sharpton's Backpedal) Or if you are a visual person, have a look at the fliers that were handed out at the rally some of which track the language that the West Palm Beach NAACP offered to "explain" their actions to their state conference.

Hat Tip to Symphony from The Dunbar Village blog for obtaining copies of the fliers.

The truth is, they NEVER should have held that press conference in the first place. There is no evidence that these boys are being treated unfairly because of their race, at least none that they offered at the press conference which would have been the responsible thing to do. If ten white teens had allegedly done this to a white woman, I would want the prosecutor to pursue the most serious charges available, if ever there was a crime that deserved a prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, the Dunbar Village rape and torture case deserves such treatment.

Al Sharpton has backpedaled on his support for their release. The NAACP is still silent and in my opinion since they appear to have been the ones to call the press conference and possibly prepare the fliers you see above, they are the ones who most need to clarify why they were there. Sometime this week I will talk about the presumption of innocence and why were are all entitled to it and the need for the public to be able to have confidence in the outcome of cases involving serious crimes and how the actions of Sharpton and the NAACP's actions that day were a threat to us all.

Cross Post: Don't Believe the Lies: Al Sharpton's Backpedal

Cross By Symphony from the Dunbar Village blog

On Thursday, March 27, 2008 columnist Tonyaa Weathersbee and blogger SheCodes appeared on Al Sharpton's radio show to discuss the intense pressure Al Sharpton and the NAACP received from bloggers and their readers regarding their support of the four males who are accused of raping a mother and her child.

We must refute some statements and accusations Mr. Sharpton made regarding the blogger campaign to denounce his unfortunate and disrespectful position in the Dunbar Village (DV) gang rape.

CAMPAIGNING FOR EQUAL MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE

Contrary to what Mr. Sharpton attempted to imply on his radio show, he did not stand before the courthouse to demand the Boca Raton rapists are denied bail. He was not complaining about preferential treatment on their behalf. If that were the case, he would have been flanked by the family members of the two girls who were raped in Boca Raton. Instead, he stood before the cameras flanked by the family members of the DV rapists and described the treatment the DV rapists have received as "unfair". He stood with them because he was advocating for them. What sense does it make to stand with the DV rapists families if he felt they should be denied bail? This backpedaling footwork would make an NFL Pro Bowl cornerback proud.

According to Nancy Othon of the Sun-Sentinel: He [Sharpton] repeatedly expressed his concern about the lack of bail for the Dunbar defendants.

According to Michael Bender of the Palm Beach Post the day before the press conference: Sharpton also will condemn the "unfair" treatment of the suspects in the Dunbar Village assaults, said the Rev. William Richardson, the Florida director of the National Action Network.

According to WPBF-TV, the local ABC affiliate: The Reverend Al Sharpton Tuesday said four black teens charged in the gang rape and beating of a West Palm Beach woman and her son were treated unfairly. Sharpton said the teens charged in the June 2007 attack in the Dunbar Village housing project should have been treated the same as five white teens recently accused of raping two young girls in Boca Raton after a party.

And far as making the rape cases equal, therefore demanding equal treatment under the law I'll start with the words of Frank Cerabino, Palm Beach Post: To call these cases identical, as Sharpton did, is to ignore far too much. And to make martyrs of the Dunbar teenagers only trivializes real cases of racial injustice and further denigrates two black victims of unspeakable crimes.

The crimes in Dunbar Village were horrific, and its not that the boys in Boca Raton deserve less than the standard punishment, the boys in Dunbar Village deserve more. Their crime was heinous and they will continue to be described by me as a roving pack of armed animals seeking to inflict unimaginable pain and damage.

BLAME THE MESSENGER

I resent the idea that people would blame the messenger for the message, rather than looking at the content of the message itself. -Anita Hill

They would love for you to fall in line with their "blame the messenger" defense strategy. Blame the messenger because they don't know what they are talking about. Blame the messenger because they got it all wrong. Mr Sharpton you can continue to ignore the benefits that technology and blogging bring to activism, thats your prerogative. You can dismiss bloggers as inaccurate and unreliable, that, sir, will be to your detriment. But bloggers specifically and grassroots activists in general are the coattails you ride into town on.

Bloggers made Jena possible, not Al Sharpton. Dunbar Village will be remembered for the work of bloggers, not Al Sharpton. To characterize us as a mere group of bloggers who get it wrong will not work with this case. If indeed we did get it wrong, we were not alone. We are joined by The Palm Beach Post, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Associated Press, and Black America Web, to name a few. You saw some of the excerpts above. There is no grand conspiracy to manipulate Al Sharpton's words. We didn't get it wrong. If anyone got anything wrong it was Sharpton for failing to deliver an unambiguous delivery of his position.

The bloggers who have contacted reporters who were on the scene, local politicians and spoke with Dunbar Village residents do not provide false information to our readers. Everything we post on our blogs can be verified. We don't post hearsay.

PROBLEM OPERATION

If there is any group of people who can't seem to get their facts straight its Sharpton and his National Action Network employees. From contradictory statements between the NAACP and NAN on who held the press conference to lies about not receiving blogger requests for clarification, the NAN has mishandled this from the beginning.

Numerous emails, letters and phone calls were made to the National Action Network. Our need for clarification was ignored. No matter what they tell you, we reached out to them. We did it as a perfunctory but sincere move because we knew they thought very little of us, but we hoped to learn their stance. They decided we were nothing more than a minor annoyance that would go away. We won't go away.

Truly, in his rush to simply play a role, any role, in Dunbar Village, I don't believe Mr. Sharpton actually thought out what position he was willing to stand for.

Let this be the alarm for any man, woman or organization that decides to align itself with those who harm Black women and children - today is a new day. Today is the day you realize we are an omnipresent force to be reckoned with and respected.

I leave you with a few words from Bella Abzug:

...whatever I am —and this ought to be made very clear—I am a very serious woman.

Open Letter Regarding NAACP, SHarpton, and Dunbar Village Atrocity

Subject: The Dunbar Village Atrocity

Synopsis:

In the past week, a rapidly-moving viral email campaign was launched, and thousands of concerned black citizens spread the word about a shocking crime against a Black woman and her 12 year old son, in which crimes against nature were committed. (read more details of the crime here)

This email, entitled “Stop Al Sharpton and the NAACP from endangering Black Women,” described a stunning betrayal in which the NAACP and Al Sharpton held a press conference and demanded bail consideration for three suspects in custody for the crime. (source1) (source2)

Concerned Black citizens all around the country were outraged by the actions of the NAACP and Al Sharpton, and many vowed to withdraw volunteering and financial support from these agencies “until they make the safety of Black women and children a priority.”

On March 24, 2008 an NAACP memo that attempted to defend this betrayal was sent to Beverly Neal, who is the Director of the NAACP’s Florida State Conference. The memo claims that the NAACP was brought into this fray by Rev. Al Sharpton. Moreover, the memo was written by Maude Ford Lee, who is President of the West Palm Beach Branch of the NAACP. (read the memo here)

On March 27,2008, activist Al Sharpton went on the air to clarify his position on the treatment of the Dunbar Village Suspects. He invited writer Tonyaa Weathersbee and blogger Arlene Fenton to his show, to discuss the matter. Rev. Sharpton claimed that he never said that the Dunbar Village suspects were being treated unfairly, and that he did not want bail for the suspects in question.

Ms Weathersbee and Ms Fenton said that their research indicated otherwise, as indicated by video footage, eyewitness accounts, and the reporting from the Florida Sun Sentinel and the Palm Beach Post.

At the end of the radio show, Al Sharpton strongly condemned any activity that would promote bail consideration for the suspects in question. Rev. Sharpton admitted that “if the suspects were white, he would have been there sooner.” He stated that this is a problem with many black civil rights organizations. He apologized and vowed to uphold his prior promise to advocate for the residents of Dunbar Village. He also challenged all activists, bloggers, and writers to be accountable to each other.

To date, the NAACP has not made an official statement denouncing the Dunbar Village Atrocity, nor have they officially expressed regret to the victim. The NAACP also has not officially retracted their statement requesting bail consideration for the alleged rapists/torturers. To our understanding, neither agency has contributed to the Victim’s Assistance Fund or created a reward program geared toward the apprehension of the remaining rapists/torturers.

Conclusion

WE ARE SATISFIED with Al Sharpton’s qualifying statements that he made on his radio show on 3/27/2008. We will watch to see if he fulfills his promise to advocate for the residents of Dunbar Village, and we are willing to assist any effort that promotes safer black neighborhoods in West Palm Beach, FL.

WE ARE NOT CONTENT with the reckless, irresponsible actions of the NAACP (West Palm Beach chapter). We continue to urge all black people, women especially, to refrain from volunteering or giving financially to this organization until they take our safety seriously.

WHAT WE WANT

We want law enforcement to make a concerted, sustained effort to apprehend the remaining suspects. We want to see a genuine reward system in place to encourage members of the community to come forward with the knowledge of the whereabouts of the remaining suspects.

We want the NAACP (West Palm Beach chapter) to reverse their position that the alleged rapists/torturers of this case should be considered for bail.

We want both the NAACP and the National Action Network to cease downgrading the gang rape/torture/atrocity of the Dunbar Village by comparing it to an unrelated gang rape, in which guns, maiming, and forced incest were not involved.

We want to see genuine victim advocacy in the form of financial support for the relocation, medical expenses, and mental therapy for the true victims in this case.

The Dunbar Village Victim Assistance Fund

Individuals who would like to donate money to the victims can go to any Wachovia Bank and donate to the St. Ann’s Victim’s Assistance Fund. Donations will go directly to the mother and her son.

St. Ann’s Catholic Church will also accept donations. Checks can be made payable to the "Dunbar Village Victim Assistance Fund - St. Ann’s".

Donations can be mailed to: St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 310 N. Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33401

Tamika Mallory from the National Action Network Issues a "Statement" About Dunbar Village- NAN and NAACP try to Throw Each Other Under the Bus--

I just got off of a very long flight and was just doing some midnight email clean up when the following statement from Tamika Mallory the Decency Initiative Chief for the National Action Network popped into my email box. I saw who the sender was and figured it would be some foolishness based on our numerous run ins and she never fails underwhelm. I am actually embarrassed to print what she wrote because of how inaccurate the following statement is, but hey--- she wants y'all to read it ( THAT SHOULD SCARE YOU!)

Let me explain what is happening, YOU ARE BEING SUCCESSFUL! Keep sending .this email to everyone you know Every day more members of the media are inquiring about this lunacy and I figure a few of them have begun to ask the National Action Network some questions in addition the West Palm Beach NAACP. Also if you know anyone in Memphis, TN the National Action Network will be there all of next week so make sure you forward the email to as many media outlets in the Memphis area as possible so they can ask Rev. Sharpton to "clarify" his statements since he is now claiming that he was misunderstood.

The National Action Network Was Called Numerous Times and Received a Letter BEFORE the Email campaign was launched last FRIDAY.

Let's also be clear that the organizers of the letter writing campaign were VERY DELIBERATE --they have kept records of the fact that BEFORE the letter writing campaign was launched last Friday that they made multiple attempts to contact both the West Palm Beach NAACP, NAACP National Headquarters and the National Action Network. In fact, the National Action Network requested a letter from one of the organizers and she supplied it. In addition I know for a fact that readers of over a dozen blogs were calling them for over a week before the mass email campaign was launched so any assertion that Rev. Sharpton did not receive a call is a lie or a delusion. I am saying all of that to demonstrate just how detached from reality the following statement by Tamika Mallory is. Regular readers know that this ain't our first tango with the Reverend's staffers so we knew exactly what what they were going to trying to pull--- obfuscation and redirection-- and we prepared for that occasion.

Here is a clue, instead of defending your boss to the death by launching cross complaints of MISREPRESENTATION, perhaps you should have clarified Rev. Sharpton's statement if you feel he was misunderstood, however, I think his statement speaks for itself. He is asking for the release of the accused rapists without citing a single statute, rules, case, or FACT which requires it other than he thinks its unfair because some people in a completely UNRELATED case with UNRELATED FACTS and UNRELATED CHARGES got bond.

Al Sharpton is Now the Victim ?
Folks notice how Ms. Mallory tries her best to turn Rev. Sharpton into the victim instead of the actual victims of an actual crime and that is sad that that appears to be as it has always been her number one priority as it relates to Dunbar Village, protecting the National Action Network instead of Black women and children.

So Ms. Mallory wanted the undivided attention of my blog readers, well her wish is my command. IF any of the other individuals involved in this matter want free space on What About Our Daughters, I will be more than happy to oblige, heck you can have the whole two hours of the podcast on Thursday as well because the more you speak, the less I have to.

Statement from Tamika Mallory

As National Director of the National Action Network’s Decency Initiative I write to refute statements made in a letter circulating on the internet that completely distort Reverend Sharpton’s position on the Dunbar Village rape case.

First, the National Action Network and Reverend Al Sharpton have advocated against any form of violence or degradation against women since its inception. In fact, in January of this year Rev. Sharpton personally visited Dunbar Village with William Franklyn Richardson, III, president of our Florida chapter, to denounce the living conditions there and the rape and violence that occurred against the victim and her son. He pledged to return and spend the night in Dunbar to hopefully further expose the living conditions that create an environment for such acts of violence to go unchallenged, but due to a storm on the night of his scheduled visit, we have rescheduled the sleep-in to mid April.

Rev. Sharpton’s January visit to Dunbar was widely reported, which is why it is strange to me that anyone would feel that his subsequent statements with the NAACP would be any different from his original statement in January. If there was confusion, one would think a person would at least call us to inquire before jumping to a self serving attack on a position we never took.

Rev. Sharpton was in Florida three weeks ago as part of a tour to make sure the Florida and Michigan delegates of the Democratic Convention, would not be seated since primaries were unfairly held in January. While in Florida, the local NAACP chapter asked him to appear at a press conference where they alleged that since the Dunbar Village incident, the local prosecutor had not held several young whites in a neighboring city who had gang raped a young girl, to the same standard that the assailants in Dunbar are facing. Their point was to underscore how the local prosecutor will not treat whites who have committed a deplorable act the same way they treat blacks. Reverend Sharpton attended and made it clear that he thinks both acts were heinous and deplorable and that both groups should be punished to the full extent of the law. He in no way excused, justified, or called for leniency in the case of the black assailants.

Whether it was Tawana Brawley, several years ago, who many didn’t believe or Meagan Williams, today, who many have forgotten, Reverend Sharpton has stood against women being violated and has supported with resources and his presence our Decency Initiative which is part of his national civil right’s organization. The Decency Initiative has been fighting against the violent and misogynistic language against women. He has done this to the chagrin of many of his supporters and many of his friends in the entertainment industry.

For anyone to distort his position and then attack it without even a phone call and to seemingly and purposely omit the fact that the press conference was about the white kids being treated with kid gloves for the same despicable act is in itself sexist. All women of all communities should expect the law to protect them and we should at least check with those that put themselves on the line for us before we rush to judge a distorted story.

Rev. Sharpton is no stranger to the causes of black women and he should at least be given the benefit of doubt before we accuse him, particularly when it is not true.

I trust that all responsible will correct this misrepresentation…

"The Same Despicable Act"????
This right here may be the source of our problem. The folks at National Action Network think the Dunbar Village rape and torture is the same case as the one they keep citing in Boca Raton---

In the Dunbar Village case, four teens are charged with armed sexual battery for the June crime where they allegedly forced the woman at gunpoint to have sex multiple times, including with her son. Police say the teens then used cleaning agents on the victims afterwards in an attempt to cover their crimes, including stuffing a bar of soap inside the woman. They face possible life in prison.

In the Boca case, five teens are charged with sexual battery on a helpless person because the then 13- and 14-year-old female victims had downed repeated shots of vodka . SOURCE

Am I the only one that see some GLARING DISTINCTIONS in these two cases that have absolutely nothing to do with the race of the defendants or am I missing something? It is breathtaking that the National Action Network brain trust can't seem to comprehend the difference between a home invasion by masked gunmen who torture, rape, sodomize, cut, burn, and beat their victims for THREE HOURS and culminate the event with a crime against nature committed against a 12 year old child (which gets a completely separate charge in Florida-Sexual Performance of a Child) and a case involving NONE of of those facts. Nope, I ain't the only person who can see the distinction.

Let's be clear that in case any of the regulars have noticed, I have not fired off any of my characteristic 10 page rants since this has cropped up because A) I've learned a thing or two over the past year B) I really do think this could be resolved without it looking like something out of romper room and C) I didn't want the "tone" of anything I might say to take away from the ultimate issue, that Al Sharpton and the NAACP called a press conference to distort the severity of the facts in the Dunbar Village case by saying OUTRIGHT that it was analogous to another crime in Boca Raton Florida. Again, do your own research about the two crimes. Do not take my word for it.

That joint NAACP and National Action Network press conference was a brazen, reckless act undermining the criminal prosecution of a very serious crime without a single fact, rule, law or legal precedent to support their assertions that these defendants are in anyway being treated unfairly. I have actually been deliberately holding back and encouraging others to do so because unlike Ms. Mallory who is trying to obfuscate and redirect attention away from the real issues in this case, I really do want people to focus on a serious problem we have with African American leadership as it relates to this issue. The fact that she continues to say that the Boca case and the Dunbar Village case are the same might point to the heart of the problem. You can click your ruby slippers three times and make a wish, but these two cases are not the same, the fact that you can't grasp that rather simple concept makes me very sad... for you.

NAACP and National Action Network Blaming Each Other
I have a letter from the President of the West Palm Beach NAACP, it will blow those of you who actually followed this case AWAY! The NAACP and the National Action Network are turning on each other. Our first clue of trouble brewing between the NAACP and Al Sharpton's National Action network should have been the ACTUAL PRESS CONFERENCE... watch Al Sharpton stomp away at the end of the press conference and then throw a mean side eye at the NAACP spokesperson before getting into his car. Listen to someon say the NAACP "crashed Sharpton's press conference." Don't believe, watch the tape. Each is blaming the other for what was said and minimizing their own role while maximizing the role of the other group in that press conference debacle.
[T]the West Palm Beach Branch participated in a recent press conference of Reverend Al Sharpton who addressed disparities in the criminal justice system specific to the cases regarding the four Black juvenile defendants in the Dunbar Village case and the five white juvenile defendants in the Boca Raton case .Upon the request of Reverend Sharpton, I welcomed and introduced Reverend Sharpton. My introductory comments were prefaced by a statement that we were assembled not to discuss or make judgments on the guilt or innocence of the defendants, but simply to call for fair and just treatment in all phases of the criminal justice system for the Dunbar Village defendants including fairness in interrogation, bonding, charging, and adequate and effective representation. Portion of Letter from Maude Ford Lee, President of West Palm Beach NAACP to the Director of the Florida State Conference of the NAACP

Hmm Tamika says the NAACP asked him to appear. The NAACP is saying things were done at Sharpton's request. Now somebody is lying confused about that there press conference and it ain't Black bloggers. If you want to judge the credibility of the parties involved, compare Maude's description of her public statements to the Director of the Florida State Conference of the NAACP to what the newspapers actually reported that Maude said:

Our kids are incarcerated, they can't even get a bond and it's unconscionable what is happening. SOURCE-Sun Sentinel

Mind you the press conference happened IN FRONT OF the PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE. Now that sounds like a bit more than "simply to call for fair and just treatment in all phases of the criminal justice system ." If you are going to say their treatment is unconscionable, then at least provide a fact, a figure, an inference. Look at all of the other defendants that get denied bond in Florida.

My Request to Any Grown Ups at the National Action Network
Honest to goodness, I can rant and rave with the best of them, but on this particular occasion, I think the seriousness of the matter involved requires a bit more than the Tamika's foolishness that polluted the inbox early this morning. I believe that the organizers of this campaign have specific issues they want addressed--- Issues you could have addressed had you returned multiple telephone calls instead of ONCE AGAIN blowing people off until they light a fire. You can end this now, before another staffer fires off another midnight missive.

I can assure you that I am not alone. I can't even claim to be the engine of this freight train. This is a diffused amorphous effort designed to hit from all sides.Everyday another creative person comes up with a new tactic. Your actions are indefensible and the sooner I have to stop typing the name "Al Sharpton" on this blog, the happier I will be. You have all of the contact information of those involved. If you need more contact information, I will be more than happy to provide it to you. Just do the right thing already- if you want to know what that is because you appear confused, have one of the grown ups return a phone call.

KEEP HITTING 'EM
Folks don't let up. Your efforts are working. Your letters are spreading and your voices are being heard on this issue. Keep forwarding the letter. The world is watching... No really, that is not one of my hyperboles, you would be surprised who is following this story.. or not. She didn't write that statement because lil' ole me wrote a couple of posts about it. Folks are outraged about this! As they should be.

I am sure Symphony who runs the Dunbar Village blog will have lots more to say about Tamika's assertion that Rev. Sharpton "missed" the town hall meeting in February because of "flight issues"--- this thing has more moving parts than an NIE.

Brothers Speak About Dunbar Village

Have you forwarded the Dunbar Village letter to your friends and family. I get forwarded emails about all kinds of foolishness. Take time to inform the world about what the NAACP and National Action Network are doing. Everyday more people learn about this latest turn of events and the indignation grows and the only way people will know is if you tell them because lord knows mainstream media isn't calling the NAACP or the National Action Network to task.... YET

Black Men Speak About Dunbar Village
First of all, let it not be said that brothers don't get it. Many of them do and they are stepping up to the plate and writing about this on their blogs as they have been doing since we first started talking about Dunbar Village.

Villager over at Electronic Village wrote a post called "Al Sharpton and NAACP Wrong in the Dunbar Village Rape Case" you need to go read the whole thing in addition to the comments and responses:

Important nubian women in my life, such as my former wife, my mom and my sisters often tell me that I have a 'hard head'. Usually, this is a result of me being slow on the uptake for an issue that they see clearly from the start. The impact of the Dunbar Village gang-rape may be yet another example of me ... and perhaps other brothers ... having a 'hard head'.

You see, the issues surrounding the Dunbar Village gang-rape that occurred last year continue to burn hot in our community ... especially with Black women. Many Black women look at the way that the Dunbar Village situation has been handled as an example of the way Black women are treated in too many situations from Corporate America to our neighborhoods. Electronic Village
Over at Soul Preaching they ask "Where Are the Preachers?"

It has been seven months since I asked the question, "Can God Count on the black Preacher?" I heard about this story on the very helpful and informative blog What about our daughters. I asked it in relation to the horrendous rape of a Black woman at the hands of some young Black men.Do we Only Care About Racism?Over the last few months, I am coming more to the conclusion that we may show up when race is a factor. We know how to deal with that issue. But the original sin of sexism is still strong in our community. . .But when a Black woman is sexually assaulted in her home for hours and her son is beaten by a group of Black men and the law enforcement drags their feet brining these men to justice and then our leaders defend the perpetrators....Today we as preachers have to raise the bar because if we are not careful...
Lord help us, for our Sexism, our Blindness, and our Silence. Soul Preaching

For those of you attempting to figure out something to say, you ought to check out this open letter to Al Sharpton and the NAACP written by Aaron over at the blog, A Political Season:
I ask, where is your moral compass? How is it that the vile nature of what you are doing is not apparent to you? You are championing rapists while deliberately, purposefully ignoring the vicious gang rape and torture of a black woman. Your actions make clear that neither you Al Sharpton as a black man, nor the NAACP, value the dignity, safety and well being of black women. Your actions make clear that the rape and violation of black women is okay depending on the race of the violator. You will protest the rape of black women by white men, but you will say nothing about the rape of black women by black men and in fact will defend the black rapists of african american women. It is a second violation of this woman and indeed of all black women as vile as the first.

Your behavior in this case is morally indefensible and despicable. There is no justification for it, no basis in morality that would support what Al Sharpton and the NAACP are doing. I demand that you reverse course. I demand that you turn the resources of your organization to providing support and aid to the innocent victims in this case, not the perpetrators. I demand that you publicly in word and deed put pressure on the West Palm Beach authorities to find and arrest the other six rapists still on the loose.

If you are unwilling to immediately and publicly acknowledge the error of your actions in regard to the Dunbar Village case, I and as many others as I can persuade to join me, will pursue every avenue available to make the public at large, the media, your membership, your financial and political supporters, your sponsors and the entire world aware of your willing and informed support and encouragement of the brutal rape and torture of a black woman. My outrage is shared by many others. NAN and the NAACP will be held accountable.

The actions of Al Sharpton and the NAACP to support rapists of black women is a moral abomination, a moral atrocity. It degrades and sullies the good the NAACP has accomplished. It should not be allowed to stand. It is non negotiable. If the NAACP and NAN must be ripped apart and rebuilt anew to restore its moral compass and establish as sacrosanct the dignity, value and safety of black women, that is preferable to organizations which knowingly support the violation and rape of black women. A Political Season

Go to A Political Season to read the entire letter. So many other bloggers are writing about this, when I get the time this week, I am going to do a mega post to try to link to all of the bloggers that have said something about Al Sharptona nd the NAACP's idiocy. Also if you want a list of which corporations and executives to appeal to to ASK Rev. Sharpton about his latest stance on Dunbar, you might want to peruse the guest list to the National Action Network conference coming up next week.

Where in the World Is Rev Al? Well if you got the Money, He's got the Time!
Well irony of ironies, Martin Luther King, III somehow let Al Sharpton get his mitts involved in the commemoration of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network will lead a "Recommitment March" to the Lorraine Motel, where Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated in 1968 as part of the NAN's 10th annual national convention April 2-5. SOURCE
So in between marching and pleading for the release of dangerous criminals, what else does he do? Well if you got the money to buy individual tickets to their events, you can attend the National Action Network Convention in for four days next week in Memphis. You can pay to go to the "Wall Street Luncheon" or perhaps, but don't try to get in on the panel about "Social Justice" because it is INVITATION ONLY... pause and let that marinate. You can pay for entry into everything else, including a performance by Mo'Nique, but when you start talking about social justice you got to have an invitation. DO go by and check out the complete schedule so you can see which organizations and corporation make the Sharpton machine possible.

Color of Change Issues Statement on Dunbar Village Case--FIrst Black Organization to Speak Out

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Mervyn Marcano, ColorOfChange.org

Statement from ColorOfChange.org Regarding Defendants in Dunbar Village Case

It is imperative, no matter what their color, the perpetrators of the brutal rape at Dunbar Village be brought to justice. It's critical for the victim, but also for Black people all over the country to insist that brutality and rape against Black women - crimes far too frequent and far too silent - be punished to the full extent of the law.

There have been concerns about whether the accused, Black men and boys, are getting a fair shake in the justice system; despite the heinous nature of the crimes, we do support their right to equal justice. But if the problem being raised is about white defendants in Florida getting off easy for their crimes, the focus should be on increasing their punishment, not on releasing the Black accused. At the end of the day, we must be vigilant in ensuring that our justice system is functioning fairly, but also soundly, so that real justice is achieved for the victims of the brutal rape and beating at Dunbar Village.

###

I got the call this afternoon. I had shut down for the holiday, but I had to break my weekend blogging moratorium to let y'all know. Color of Change is the first African American organization to speak out about Dunbar Village... AND WE DIDN'T EVEN ASK THEM TO! I posted this morning that we're the ones we've been waiting for. We'll continue to press the NAACP about its reckless actions related to the Dunbar Village suspects, but I think that it is clear that the hope for change won't come from the Civil Rights Industrial Complex. To learn more about Color of Change, go to the Color of Change website.

MAKE A DONATION:
Don't just rant and rave. We should deny financial support to organizations that are indifferent but we should also show support to those who are making the effort and I have said before that Color of Change sets the gold standard when it comes to online advocacy, Black or White ( even if we sometimes disagree on some issues :) ). I just made a donation. You can do the same. It is time for new leadership.

We're the Ones We've Been Waiting For on Dunbar Village

For those of your friends, family, and coworkers who don't read blogs, you can find a printer friendly version of the following Open Letter to Stop Al Sharpton and the NAACP from Endangering Black Women.Print out a copy and hand them out. Easter Sunday would be a good opportunity for you to hand it out. If you want more people to know about this issue, we aren't goign to be able to rely on other people and organizations to do it. We each have the power to do it for ourselves. Thanks to Shecodes over at Black Women Vote for drafting the open letter and organizing the growing coalition of Black bloggers who are going to stay on top of this story.

DEAR READERS:

Stop Al Sharpton and the NAACP from endangering Black Women!

Right-thinking black people everywhere are stunned by the recent
betrayal of Al Sharpton and the NAACP in a situation that is just too
outrageous to ignore.

This is a painful story to tell, but it's important for the moral,
law-abiding majority of black Americans to understand exactly why Al
Sharpton and the NAACP must be immediately stopped.

On June 18, 2007, a black woman was gang raped by 10 youths and forced
at gunpoint to have sex with her own 12 year old son in a housing
complex called Dunbar Village in West Palm Beach, Florida. The young
men not only viciously punched, kicked and sliced this sister and her
son with glass objects, but they also blinded her boy by pouring nail
polish remover into his eyes.

The young men forced this sister and son to lay naked in a bathtub
together, and attempted to set them on fire (they could not find
matches). The youths boldly took cell phone pictures so that they
could enjoy their violent, immoral and sadistic acts at a later time.
The violence continued for more than three hours, and although this
sister's neighbors heard her screams, no one called the police or came
to her aid.

This sister and her son had to walk a mile to the hospital, because
the assailants stole her car, and threatened to kill her and her
family if she told the authorities.

Only four of the young men have been apprehended, while the remaining
six are on the loose, doing Lord knows what in our communities. There
is no manhunt for the remaining suspects.

As devastating as this story is, what the NAACP and Al Sharpton have
done about it will simply take your breath away:

Not only did the NAACP ignore hundreds of requests to assist this
woman because it was 'outside the scope of their mission', but they
joined forces with Al Sharpton, and sent their lawyers to speak out IN
SUPPORT OF THE RAPISTS.

You heard me right.

Even though there is conclusive DNA evidence and signed confessions,
the NAACP and Al Sharpton are saying that it is 'unfair' to not offer
bail to these four alleged rapists. They even had a press release
about it.

IT IS TIME FOR SENSIBLE BLACK PEOPLE TO STOP THIS KIND OF NONSENSE
ONCE AND FOR ALL.

Al Sharpton and the NAACP are banking on the belief that you and I
will be just like this black woman's neighbors. Join me by saying NOT
THIS TIME. We will not turn a deaf ear to when we hear calls for help
from one of our sisters and brothers who are being victimized.

Stop the NAACP and Al Sharpton's National Action Network from
committing this disgrace in our community. Just this once, let's stand
up and be counted by saying that we demand safe neighborhoods for our
women and children.

Here is what you can do:

1. Spread the word. Forward this email if your conscience and concern
have been raised. Send it to every concerned black citizen that you
know.

2. Demand an explanation from your local NAACP chapter about this
case. Cancel your membership to these organizations, and write a
letter explaining that you will return when they prioritize the public
safety needs of black women and children.

3. If you do not belong to these organizations, call and write them to
tell them of your outrage and displeasure:

give you an update on the status of this situation. DO NOT LET THIS
GO. Let us start working for safer neighborhoods in black communities.

Tonyaa Weathersbee Lays Out Why Sharpton and the NAACP are Wrong on Dunbar Village

Tonyaa Weathersbee takes Al Sharpton to task over at Black American Web (Why Would Al Sharpton Come to the Aid of the Teens in Florida’s Notorious Project Rape Case?)for his unconscionable decision to attempt to spring the Dunbar Village gang rape suspects. She points out why race isn't the only difference between the Dunbar Village case and the Boca case that Sharpton and the West Palm beach NAACP are attempting to use to justify releasing the Dunbar Village to roam free:

The difference is that the Boca Raton teenagers who are accused of rape were hanging out with their victims. They all knew each other, and, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, there may have been some confusion as to whether one of the girls had actually asked to have sex with one of them.

The youths who are accused in the Dunbar Village rape weren’t hanging out with their victim.

They brought guns to their party.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, which quoted court and police documents, the youths lured their victim, who had spent a day delivering phone books, to the door by telling her that the tires on her truck were flat. When she stepped outside, she was confronted by three, gun-wielding men, who ordered her back into her apartment and demanded money.

That’s when the terrorization took off.

When the victim told them she had no money, they ripped off her clothes and took turns raping and sodomizing her. They forced her to perform oral sex on her 12-year-old son. Then they made her get into a tub filled with vinegar and water, and, afterward, seemed to get their jollies pouring any stinging, corrosive household product they could find on her -– like hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, nail polish remover and ammonia.

And they would have set her on fire if they had been able to find a lighter.

Do forward the story from Black America Web along so they will know what the NAACP and AL Sharpton are up to in Florida.

Dunbar Village Video:"Answer the Call"

To follow up on our last video "Crickets " here is the latest Dunbar Village video entitled "Answer the Call" - Pointing out the NAACP's hypocrisy in their handling of the Dunbar Village gang rape. I have already thought about the concept for the next one. It involves a blue screen a megaphone shaped spaceship and Al Sharpton in a Star Fleet uniform. Let me know what you think.

In June of 2007, a horrific crime against nature and humanity happened in a place called Dunbar Village in West Palm Beach, FL. A single Black mother and her child were brutally attacked for three hours when teen African American teens invaded her home because she had reported "littering" around her apartment. They tortured and raped the woman and her son for three hours. Not a single neighbor came to their aid. The complex had no security despite a ridiculously high crime rate, the local government had ignore security issues while building luxury office buildings on the nice side of town, law enforcement wasn't sufficient...in other words, these poor Black women and children were left to rot and die.

When a group of concerned citizens contacted various African American leaders about the conditions at Dunbar Village, not a single on responded publicly. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said that they would not become involved because Black on Black crime was not a part of their mission, yet 7 months later, the NAACP came out for the first time in the case, but not to speak about inhumane living conditions and out of control crime, but to call for the release of the four suspected gang rapists despite the sadistic nature of the crime. They didn't offer a single legal reason for the release and didn't comment on whether releasing the suspects would place the community or the victim in imminent peril.

The perpetrators of Black on Black crime are not the only ones that need justice, the victims of Black on Black crime need justice too!

Feel free to forward this video on to your local and state chapter of the NAACP. The world needs to know about their unconscionable behavior in West Palm Beach

New Dunbar Village Videos:"Crickets"

I've been working on some YouTube Videos to get the word out about Al Sharpton and the NAACP's ridiculousness related to standing up for the alleged rapists while they ignored the victims for months.

Tell me what you think.
